** Sincere apologies to all Leaf fans on the Hammers. If you'd like some ammunition for retaliation, know that (a) my Habs are equally dysfunctional and over-rated, albeit marginally more successful of late, and (b) I have the bulk of the Coldplay and Counting Crows discographies on my iPod. Use at your own discretion.
Right. The game.
Some days our laid back and unconfrontational (real word?) nature proves to be a detriment (see: here as well). While not solely to blame for our loss last night, it maaaay have been a contributor. For example, witness the first point the Querks tallied, which probably could have been called back on account of a travel (one of many), a pick (maybe?), or an out-of-bounds (as viewed from the sidelines). Now maybe I don't "know the rules" or am a "sore loser" or am "struggling to find an angle", but I suspect that, collectively, we would rather lose with relative dignity than engage in a long-winded and ultimately fruitless argument with some sweaty, mouthy, anal dude in a head-band. Which I am okay with. What am I trying to say here…? Jesus, I don't know. As you were.
But enough whining, let's make with some positives. Last night saw the Hammers employ sound defensive strategy with a zone D into the wind, which might have been our undoing, but was certainly the right idea. We also had more stacks on offense than ever before, and a pretty good run of handling against their zone D (which they totally copied from us). We had a few excellent sequences of short quick passes up the field (Becky -> Aimee -> Marcy -> Dan, I think), and some truly selfless play from both Matt and Derek, who sacrificed both face and several layers of forearm skin to ensure the game remained within reach. The Freeman's Bottled Heineken Player Of the Game, though, goes to Dan for not only being in attendance and providing me with spare cleats after my $30 Canadian Tire jobs disintegrated, but also for the fantastic, inadvertently-dirty pre-huck advice of "go in slow and out fast!"
Huzzah!
I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to both Marcy and Maria for repeatedly getting your names mixed up (know that I do in fact know who's who), and also to Disc Array whom I greeted at Freeman's last night as Random Fling. But I blame Michelle and Matt for that one.
Until next week,
AA
PS: also to consider/discuss:
- should we reschedule the July 28th game on account of vacations and Arcade Fire concert attendance?
- July team BBQ/dance party anyone?
- Are Hall & Oats truly deserving of their Number One Pop Artist (1980-83) designation, per Casey Casem?

Nicely done, double-A.
Re your questions:
- I've already asked the league convenor to reschedule the July 28 game. If that doesn't happen, I can contact the other captain to see if another date works well for both teams.
- July team BBQ/dance party for sure. The best day for me is Saturday, July 23. I like the idea of Becky & me hosting a BBQ then moving to MK's nearby house for shitfacedness and dancing.
- They absolutely are. "Kiss on my List", "You Make my Dreams (Come True)", "Private Eyes", "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)", "One on One", "Maneater".... it's all gold. 1980 through July 1983 was, indeed, their time to collectively shine.
ahahahah. Was it really Disc Array? Shit. I thought I was totally right on the Random Fling thing. My bad. Glad I didn't say hi to them.
BBQ/Dancy party is a must. I even promise some hard core Hall & Oats on the playlist. Followed by Down with Webster who do a kick ass Rich Girl cover. And did you know that Brandon Flowers (yes I am still a HUGE Killers fan even though their last album, although still in the CD player of my car, was not well received) believes Rich Girl to be the most instructive pop song of our time? Just a bit of trivia in support of Casey Casem's position.
Oh and the 23rd is a great choice.
in response to Aaron's questions:
- Yes please
- Yes please
- I don't know (I was 3 years old - and so were you for that matter).
What can I say?
My advice to "go in slow and out fast!" is useful for more than just Ultimate :)
Reminds me of a particular "the" move Seinfeld episode (http://www.seinfeldscripts.com/TheFusilliJerry.htm)
- Great! Arcade Fire here I come!
- 23rd should work, methinks
- Hall & Oats remind me of swimming lessons at the Dartmouth Sportsplex, which is neither good nor bad, I suppose. All those singles are pretty excellent I'll admit, but H&O over Duran Duran or Prince?
Also - check out the comedy sketch YACHT ROCK on Youtube. Comedy gold!
Good work AA. I felt as though I was living in your head for a few minutes as you struggled with a bout of insomnia.
I don't think anyone would suggest that Hall & Oates have made a greater contribution to the music industry than Prince. I respectfully suggest that they were aided in that particular contest by the fact that unlike Duran Duran and Prince, H&O's every musical effort was pure pop, where D&D and P straddled genres and lost the purist votes.
I'm already looking forward to the BBQ, and believe I will be available on the 23rd, unless I qualify for the Highland Games, which I feel no shame in acknowledging to be a longshot at best.
Ahem. 1980 through July 1983 were Casey's parameters. I love me some Prince, but Billboard hits is Billboard hits - and this was pre-Purple Rain. It was even pre- the bulk of singles off Thriller, otherwise MJ would take them all down. And that's too early a time frame for Duran Duran's peak hit era (which, by the way, would not feature a six-pack of hits anywhere near the calibre of H&O as noted above. As for Down With Webster's cover of "Rich Girl", they need a collective kick in the nuts. That "She's Dope" song, however, is worryingly catchy.
the yazdicks will be frolicking on on the beaches of canada's tiny island on july 23. enjoy the party without us...doubtful, very doubtful...
Not sure it's worth doing without the Ruddsbeks....
As for Hall and Oates, good point on the timeline Tim. I was so quick to leap to Prince's defence I didn't pay attention to that detail. Thanks go to Hall & Oates for helping to put the final bullet betwixt the eyes of disco.
In defense of Counting Crows
